Re: Procurement of Coca-Cola Products
Effective today, April 11, 2006, the University of Michigan will resume procurement of Coca-Cola products.
On December 29, 2005, when the University suspended procurement of Coca-Cola products, we indicated that we would resume purchasing if the details of an independent, third-party investigation in Colombia could be resolved to our mutual satisfaction, and if we could agree on the process for a third-party review of environmental concerns in India.
The University has been working with Coca-Cola over the past several months to try to reach agreement. On April 10 the Coca-Cola Company sent a letter to the University outlining how and when the United Nation’s International Labor Organization will conduct an independent third-party review of Coca-Cola’s labor practices in Columbia and recommending a process for a third-party assessment of environmental concerns in India. The University is satisfied that the details for carrying out the two investigations will allow for credible, independent assessments of the concerns raised by the University’s Dispute Review Board and therefore meet our prerequisite to resume purchasing Coca-Cola products.
With this memorandum, I am notifying all Departments within the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint Campuses and the Health System that they may resume purchasing Coca-Cola products for University events, hosting requirements, University food services, and cash operation sales (i.e. vending and convenience stores).
