Sources: Stipend and health care information for Graduate Student Instructors from The Chronicle of Higher Education's survey of the largest research universities in the United States, to which 83 institutions responded. Results are found at: http://chronicle.com/stats/stipends/2004/.
Tuition waiver, appointment duration, and percentage of health care premiums covered by the institution for spouse and dependents are from selected institutions.
n/a - Information was not provided.
All stipends and benefits are based on .50 (half-time) appointment fraction for an academic year.
The "monthly stipend" is derived by dividing the academic year stipend by the duration of the appointment.
A health care percentage of "0%" means either the institution does not offer health care insurance at all, or offers it but does not pay any percent of it.
* Varies depending on whether coverage is for spouse, dependent, or spouse and dependent.
**A "full" tuition waiver usually covers tuition only and not required fees.
For universities where the amount of tuition waiver is different for residents
and non-residents, "NR" indicates non-resident and "Res" indicates resident. The University of California system does not charge "tuition" to
resident students; they are charged general and educational fees plus other smaller dedicated fees. Most of the fees charged to residents and non-residents are waived
except for fees such as student activity, facilities, and recreation. In addition to these fees, non-residents are assessed tuition which is not waived for
graduate student instructors.
