Recommendations on the use of masks
Outside of health care settings, University of Michigan health care officials recommend the use of surgical masks only for those who are sick with the flu, if they must go out in the public (to see a physician).
For example, students and others who come to the University Health Service complaining of flu-like illness will be asked to wear a mask while they are waiting to be seen.
Masks help to stop the spread of the flu virus by containing any sneezes or droplets that might spread the virus.
