In 1954, the Supreme Court changed the course of American history.

Its decision in Brown v. Board of Education ended legal segregation in public education, energized the civil rights movement, and engaged the country in a national conversation about race and rights that continues to this day.

In the winter and spring of 2004, the University of Michigan held a semester-long commemoration of the Brown v. Board decision to take stock of this difficult and yet hopeful half-century in American race relations.

This website is your archive for commemoration events, speakers, classes, and community projects, plus multimedia presentations of some of the distinguished speakers who came to campus and gave presentations.

The major sponsors of the Brown 50th Commemoration are:  Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs; Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives; Law School; Ford School of Public Policy; School of Education; School of Art; College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; Rackham School of Graduate Studies; Dialogues on Diversity; Center for Research on Learning & Teaching; Arts of Citizenship; University Library.

New section! “Beyond Brown” examines how far we have come as a nation since 1954, and how far we have to go. Please visit the Beyond Brown section for information and resources.
