House Democratic Caucus Chairman Bob Menendez (D-NJ): JERSEY CITY, NJ - House Democratic Caucus Chairman Bob Menendez (D-NJ) today made the following statement in response to the split Supreme Court ruling on the University of Michigan's affirmative action admissions program: “Today's Supreme Court decision puts to rest a debate that has gone on far too long in this country. With this ruling, the Justices have reaffirmed that affirmative action is not only constitutional, but actually provides significant educational benefits by promoting a diverse student body. “It is in our country's best interest to provide opportunities for those at a disadvantage and to provide a means to overcome many of the educational barriers that still exist in America. While we have come a long way, it would a mistake to believe that affirmative action is no longer necessary. “Given that the Hispanic community, compared to the rest of the nation, is younger by almost a decade, the future success of our economy and country as a whole will largely depend on the quality of education Hispanic children receive. Today's decision by the High Court will provide Hispanic, African-American and Asian-American children with a level playing field, and help guarantee that these children will be able to compete and succeed in the 21st Century market place. “I applaud the Court's decision, and hope that opponents of affirmative action will cease to attack a program that even a conservative court recognizes as essential to the educational well-being of the nation.” Contact: Andrew Kauders (202)225-3210 Desiree Ramos (201)222-2828 |
